A powerful feature documentary by multiple award-winning director Min Sook Lee (El Contrato, Hogtown, Tiger Spirit) and Emmy award-winning producer Lisa Valencia-Svensson (Herman’s House), tells the undertold story of migrant agricultural workers struggling against Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) that treats foreign workers as modern-day indentured labourers.

One essential voice is excluded from Canada’s largest and most controversial industrial development; the voice of Indigenous communities downstream from the Oil Sands.
In close collaboration with local communities along the Athabasca and Slave Rivers our focus on changes in the health of wildlife, the environment, and local people have led us to develop the One River, Many Relations Documentary. One River Many Relations highlights both the benefits and the harms associated with the Oil Sands from the experience and insights of the Mikisew Cree First Nation and the Dene people of Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, Fort Chipewyan.

Kavar is the shared name of a cluster of Kurdish villages in the east of Turkey. When the peasants of Kavar were finally able to return to their villages after having had to flee in the 1990s, as a result of armed conflict between Turkish Army and Kurdish Guerillas, they had to build their lives from scratch. But life today, as it has been before, is far from being generous to the people (of Kavar). A peasant trying to protect his corn field from the attack of the wild boars, a young beekeeper trying to stand on her own as an independent woman despite her oppressive family, a father’s journey to Kobane (Syria) to find his young daughter who has joined the fight to defend Kurdish cities from ISIS… This is the name of the land where heavy price is paid to have an ordinary life…
This movie tells the story of those who have never succumbed to injustices, frustrations, and hardships, and never lost the will to rebuild life. Perhaps it is mostly the story of the women of Kavar, and the euphoria of nature…
